The city of Brasov (Kronstadt) is one of the most popular destinations in Romania and for good reason. Brasov is a city worth visiting with numerous old buildings and a beautiful town hall square, where numerous restaurants invite you to linger. Just stroll through the alleys of the old town and let your eyes wander. The old houses often have beautiful facades with various decorations. Take a seat on one of the many terraces and enjoy one of the traditional Romanian dishes or international cuisine. The best places to sit are on Piata Sfatului (Town Hall Square), where you can also see the Town Hall (Casa Sfatului), the Black Church (Biserica Neagra), the fountain (Fantana Arteziana) and Tampa (the local mountain). Furthermore, from the Town Hall Square you can reach the most important sights in the Old Town and some museums on foot. Since Brasov is beautiful and there is a lot to see in the surrounding area, Brasov is a top travel destination in Romania.

You should visit the Black Church (Biserica Neagra), a Protestant church in Gothic style and one of the landmarks of Brasov. From the hall church, you can reach St. Catherine’s Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei), part of the former fortification, in a few minutes. Not far from Catherine’s Gate are the next sights of Brasov. The Schei Gate (Poarta Schei), built in the period 1827-1828. The Weavers’ Bastion (Bastionul Țesătorilor) is also part of the city’s former medieval fortifications and is very well preserved. The bastion is located at the foot of the Tampa and right next to the Sub Tampa promenade, which you should walk along. From the promenade you have a good view of the city, even at dusk. (the promenade is illuminated in the dark).

Brasov

The best view of Brasov is from Tampa Hill. If you are good on foot, you can walk up one of the hiking trails. I recommend the blue-marked path, as it offers beautiful views of the landscape. The yellow marked trail is faster but also more difficult. The fastest way is to take the Telecabina (cable car). It takes about 3 minutes to take the passengers to the top. The viewing platform is then only about a 5-minute walk away. Right next to the platform is the Brasov sign. Like in Hollywood, the name of the city is placed in large letters on the mountain. Less well-known are the viewpoints on the road to Poiana Brasov (Strada Poiana Doamnei). And while you’re on the road, continue on to Poiana Brasov, the most famous ski resort in Romania, which also has a lot to offer in summer. At this point I would like to recommend a restaurant located just before Poiana Brasov. Stana Turistica (https://www.sergianagrup.ro/stana-turistica) is a beautiful restaurant with an even more beautiful view and tasty food.

There is so much to see in Brasov and the surrounding area that it is difficult to choose. But what you should definitely see is the Black Church, as already mentioned. You can also walk along the medieval city walls or through one of the narrowest streets in the world, the Strada Sforii, also known as Zwirngässchen or Schnurgässchen. A little more strenuous is the walk up to the Brasov Citadel, the former castle that was part of the fortifications and is now a popular sight in the city. The Black and White Towers are also worth seeing, as well as the building of the Prefectura Municipiului Brașov or the historic building that now houses the post office. The Town Hall with the statue of Lupa Capitolina in the front on Bulevardul Eroilor. The she-wolf with the two suckling infants. If you need a break, take a seat in one of the cafés or restaurants on Strada Republicii. You can also find peace and quiet in the city park (Parcul Nicolae Titulescu). A completely different park is Parc Aventura, which is particularly popular with climbers.

You can also find nature on numerous hiking trails in the region. The Pietrele lui Solomon (Solomon’s Rocks) are a must-see, easily accessible from the city by bus or taxi. Other must-see destinations near Brasov include Bran Castle (Castle Dracula) in the town of the same name. You can go there by car or bus, or take a guided tour. But no matter which option you choose, you should get to Dracula Castle early. Also great is Peles Castle, a magnificent 19th century building located in Sinaia, a beautiful town not far from Brasov. Another castle near Brasov is Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni. But Busteni has much more to offer. In the Bucegi Nature Park you will find numerous hiking trails as well as unique rock formations. Take the telecabina in Busteni and enjoy the fantastic view. No less spectacular is the Canyon of the 7 Ladders (canion sapte scari) in Timisul de Jos or the Solmon Rocks (Pietrele lui Solomon) at the foot of which you can picnic or start the hiking trail to Poiana Brasov. By the way, if you like hiking, you will find beautiful and well-signposted hiking trails in all these places. The small town of Predeal also offers hiking trails and, in winter, a paradise for skiing.
