Discover Fagaras

The city of Fagaras is located in the Transylvania region (Transilavania) in Romania and is known for its fortress complex, which is over 600 years old. The fortress is the landmark of the city and is very worth seeing, even if the history of the castle is sometimes thin. For example, the Fagaras Fortress (Cetatea Făgărașului) was also used as a prison during the communist dictatorship. Take time to visit this magnificent building, which also houses a museum (Muzeul Ţării Făgăraşului ). Another sight of the city is the magnificent Fagaras Cathedral (Catedrala Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul), whose golden domes can be seen from afar. The town of Fagaras could be called the gateway to the mountain range of the same name.

Fagaras

Due to its location, the town of Fagaras is also a good starting point to explore the sights, attractions and natural beauties in the surrounding area. First of all, I want to mention the magnificent Fagaras Mountains, whose peak (Vârful Moldoveanu) is the highest elevation in Romania. In the Fagaras Mountains you will also find numerous hiking trails as well as the fantastic mountain lake (Balea Lac) and various waterfalls. From Fagaras you can also reach the world-famous Transfagarasan pass road, which leads you over the Carpathians. The monastery (Mănăstirea Rupestră Șinca Veche ), located about 25 kilometers from Fagaras, is also worth seeing. The hills on the outskirts of the village of Sona are still a mystery, surrounded by numerous legends. I should mention the monastery ruins (Ansamblul fostei Abații Cisterciene) , which are 30 kilometers away. Not to forget the Olt River, which offers opportunities for water sports, picnics, walks and fishing.
