Semenic Cheile Carașului National Park (Parcul Național Semenic – Cheile Carașului) is located in western Romania and covers 36 hectares of mountains, forests, rivers and waterfalls, as well as caves that you can discover through numerous well-marked hiking trails. The nature reserve is also home to a great variety of flora and fauna, as well as a rich fauna. Among them are brown bears, wolves, lynxes, foxes and deer. However, the flora, fauna and wildlife differ within the park, which is divided into two areas: Semenic Mountains (Munții Semenicului) and Anina Mountains (Munții Aninei). The highest peak in the National Park is located in the Semenic Mountains area. The peak Piatra Goznei (Vârful Piatra Goznei) is over 1400 meters high. In the Anina Mountains, the highest elevation is about 1000 meters above sea level.
Semenic Cheile Carașului National Park
The main purpose of the national park is to protect ecosystems, but it is also an important recreational area for people. Visitors should therefore abide by the rules and, for example, not leave any trash behind. Among other things, this serves the safety of visitors to the national park, as wild animals are attracted to the trails, especially by food scraps. Among the attractions in Semenic-Cheile Carasului National Park that you should have seen are the gorges as well as the caves and the special viewpoints. A hike, for example, through the gorge Carasului (Cheile Carasului) or the gorge Garlistei ( Cheile Garlistei) is recommended. Also worth seeing are the waterfalls like the waterfall Sumbrac (Cascada Sumbrac) or the lake Lacul Buhui. You should not miss one of the caves. Cave Comarnic (Pestera Comarnic), Cave Gaura Turcului (Pestera Gaura Turcului) or Cave Buhui (Pestera Buhui) are only three of the numerous caves in the national park. Grandiose views can be enjoyed from the peaks Varful Semenic (1445m), Varful Gozna (1447m) or Varful Piatra Nedeii (1437m).
In Semenic-Cheile Carasului National Park there are several hiking trails with different levels of difficulty. One of the most difficult trails takes you from Gărâna-Semenic-Izvoarele Nera(Boutul Calului) and is about 23 kilometers long. The path from Anina to Gârliște is about 16 kilometers long. However, there are also shorter routes such as from Carsova to Garliște it is only about 4 kilometers.
